In the past two years, due to spring frost, there has been a low yield in pistachios orchards, and better production is expected for this year.
There is a joint technical cooperation document between Iran and FAO for pistachio, according to which, in the project to improve pistachio production and export through the establishment of comprehensive and integrated product management, international standards and the capacity of international technical consultations and world-class equipment are used.
This cooperation document is for two years and after two years, FAO support services will continue in the field of this project.
The area of pistachio orchards in Iran is 500,000 hectares, and Iran ranks second in pistachio production, with a production of about 130 to 140 million tons, after the United States with about 500 million tons. Of course, this rank is being threatened by countries like Turkey and Uzbekistan.
Iran’s pistachio export to Africa from March to October 2023 was equal to 593 thousand dollars, which is a small figure compared to the export of products such as biscuits and wafers with 3.2 million dollars.
The main export and import items of Iran from the Eurasian Union in 8 months of 2023 show that in the export sector, pistachios with fresh skin worth 78 million dollars are at the top of the list of exports, and wheat and livestock corn are the largest share of imports, worth 465 and 149 million dollars, respectively.
The weight of pistachio exports from March to September 2023 was 20,000 tons, which shows a seven percent increase compared to the same period in 2022.
During this period, the highest amount of pistachio exports was to the countries of the Russian Federation with 28 million dollars, Germany with 13.1 million dollars, the United Arab Emirates with 13 million dollars, India with 12.8 million dollars and Kyrgyzstan with 12.5 million dollars. .
In total, 57.7% of the total value of current pistachio exports has been exported to these five countries.
Also, the customs that accounted for the highest amount of pistachios exports in this time period were Mashhad customs with 33 million dollars, Rafsanjan special economic zone with 26 million dollars, Sirjan special economic zone with 21 million dollars, West Tehran with 20 million dollars. Kerman with 11 million dollars, Shahid Rajaei and Jolfa with 9 million dollars each and Tabriz customs with 4 million dollars have hosted the export of this agricultural product.
